Program Information
Nursing careers is a course designed for students who are interested in obtaining the Michigan Certified Nursing Assistant certificate. The class covers both the state mandated health science curriculum for career and technical education and the nurse aide training curriculum. The second semester involves a 10 week clinical experience at the Tuscola County Medical Care Community where students will be caring for residents as part of their training.
This program is an advanced academic program for the self-disciplined and motivated student who is interested in pursuing a career in the health field. This program prepares students for articulation to Delta College, Baker College, or Davenport University for a smooth transition from high school to college. This course fulfills the Michigan Merit Curriculum graduation requirement for Visual Performing and Applied Arts and the online experience. Most high schools also grant credit for 3rd level science and the 4th level math (check with your counselor). The student club associated with this class is Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA).

Special Class Features and Certifications
Students who enroll in Nursing Careers will have an opportunity to take the Michigan State Examination for Nursing Assistants at the end of the school year and earn a State of Michigan CNA (Competency Nursing Assistant Certificate). Students will also have the opportunity to become certified in American Heart Basic Life Support CPR.

Student Organizations & Competitions
Students may become members of HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), which allows students to learn leadership skills and develop physical, mental, and social well-being. Students have the opportunity to attend and compete at the Regional, State and National Conferences.

Students interested in a health profession, such as nursing careers, should like working with people, be able to work while under stressful situations, enjoy variety in their work, and be physically, emotionally, and mentally active.
Upon successful completion of this program, students can select from entry-level positions at a long term care facility, extended care facility, nursing home, or home care agency. Many colleges offer further training toward more advanced careers in nursing.

College Credit and Articulation
One of the ways the Tuscola Technology Center is able to help students make the successful transition from high school to college is by offering articulated college credit. The technical skills and knowledge a student learns can save tuition fees, shorten the time a student spends in college and can reduce the duplication of courses at the college level. To receive articulated credit a student needs good grades, good attendance and be able to demonstrate that they have the maturity to bypass the college level courses.

Work Placement Opportunities
Work experience and internships in area businesses are a highlight of this program. Second year students are given an opportunity to enroll in co-op experiences. Students have the opportunity to obtain co-op experiences with various businesses including, but not limited to: Tuscola Medical Care Facility, McLaren Caro Region Hospital, and Hills and Dales Hospital.

The Tuscola Technology Center is fortunate to have community and business leaders involved in the success of our students.
The committee members are professionals in business and industry as well as counselors and teachers from our sending schools and local colleges. Their input is vital in assuring that our students receive industry standard instruction in their field of study.
